The Learning Support Department aims to be a warm, welcoming and ‘safe’ place for students with needs to seek support. The service we offer often runs parallel to the School’s pastoral support system. We strive to help to raise self-esteem and empower the students to recognise and celebrate their personal achievements. The key is to help the individual to understand themselves, their skills and their learning differences well enough that they become confident, independent learners.
Students in Key Stage 3 are invited to attend a club called CAKE – a half-termly block of small group support sessions based on identifying a host of suitable multisensory learning strategies, in a fun and engaging way, whilst provision in Key Stage 4 tends to be on a one to one basis. Where necessary, and where appropriate evidence has been provided, access arrangements for examinations will be applied for and put in place.
To plan the best ways forward for an individual’s support, an Individual Education Plan (IEP) is drawn up, in consultation with the student, teachers and parents, as well as using information from any assessments. The student voice is very important to the process and we will look to identify each student’s preferred learning style to help inform her IEP and subsequent differentiation recommendations. This may take the form of in class or one to one support, as well as regular ‘drop in’ sessions. There is always someone here to help.
