From 2012, girls enter the Senior House at the age of 11 in Year 7. The curriculum, planned in accordance with national guidelines, is broad and there are also many opportunities for outside trips and school-based events linked to academic studies. Recently there were visits to the First World War battlefields in Belgium and France, a Mediterranean cruise to study Ancient History sites, language trips to Florence, Berlin, Madrid and the Dordogne, annual ski trips to America and numerous school based events.
Sporting Activit ies
The girls take part in a wide variety of sporting activities. These range from tennis, netball and swimming to kick boxing, streetdance and tag rugby. There is something for everyone and the girls are encouraged to try as many different activities as possible so that they can find out which sports suit them best. The school has excellent facilities, including tennis courts, a hockey pitch, athletics field and three sports halls, including a new Sport England size hall, built in 2009. St. Mary's is a founder member of the School Sport Sponsorship, which provides the girls with many opportunities to participate in sports with other local schools and has been awarded the Sportsmark and Activemark Awards.
GCSEs
In Years 10 and 11, girls take between 8 and 11 GCSEs and year on year achieve high levels of academic success. In 2011, St. Mary's achieved the highest ever GCSE results:
- 60% A* and A grades
- 88% A* to B grades.
There are 6 core subjects which must be taken and the girls can then choose up to five additional optional subjects. Below is a list of compulsory and optional subjects. We are also an accredited ECDL centre and all girls not taking ICT GCSE take the ECDL instead (the ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence) is a globally recognised qualification in ICT and digital literacy and consists of seven separate modules covering computer theory and practice)
