PE and School Sport

St. Mary's Physical Education department aims to provide equality of access for all pupils to a broad, balanced and modern curriculum. The development of tolerance, a sense of fair play and good sporting behaviour are considered to be essential elements of the learning process. We operate an inclusive policy which gives every girl the opportunity to participate in a wide range of physical activities and in a variety of roles from choreographer to official, coach to umpire, as well as team player. This helps to extend her understanding of each activity and expand her repertoire of physical and social skills.

We want every girl to find a PE activity she enjoys and which she can continue to develop throughout her adult life. We run a very active PE department, with a number of initiatives designed to help the girls gain maximum potential from their PE activities:

  • We offer both GCSE and A level PE
  • We are a member of the local School Sport Partnership (a collaboration between local state schools and St. Mary's to broaden PE and sport opportunities for all pupils).
  • We also offer Step Into Sport, a similar programme to the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, designed to develop leadership in sport and through sport for young people aged 11 to 19.
  • Our annual Gym & Dance Show is a very popular whole school production, involving girls from age 5 to 18.
  • We have recently built a brand new Sport England size Sports Hall, which has enabled us to offer a much wider range of activities to the girls and also allowed us to host sporting activities throughout the winter months, such as netball at primary as well as secondary level and England Netball coaching workshops.
  • In addition to all that, we have a comprehensive range of extracurricular clubs and activities for the girls to enjoy.
