Duke of Edinburgh

The Duke of Edinburgh Award

At St Mary’s we offer the three levels of the Duke of Edinburgh Award; Bronze, Silver and Gold. The Award is very much in line with the ethos of St Mary’s as it develops well rounded individuals with crucial life skills, including teamwork, trust and communication, preparing the girls for life beyond St Mary’s. A high proportion of our girls from Years 9-13 choose to undertake the Awards.

There are four sections to the DofE Programme, plus a residential section for the Gold, which must all be completed to achieve the Award:

Skill – Developing a new skill is an opportunity to pursue an interest, it can be literally anything that appeals and is a new experience. Expanding personal skills improves confidence and widens horizons.

Volunteering – Volunteering is incredibly beneficial to the students as well as the organisations for whom the girls volunteer. It provides the opportunity for the girls to become involved in a project, or with an organisation, that they really care about, developing their interpersonal and empathy skills at the same time as making a difference to people’s lives and helping the local community.

Physical – Physical activity is fun, beneficial to health and improves physical fitness. It is also a further opportunity to mix with other students to broaden interpersonal and communication skills.

Expedition – The expeditions are undoubtedly challenging but offer adventure with experiences and memories that last a lifetime. The girls develop crucial skills in teamwork, taking the initiative, perseverance and navigation.

Residential – A residential stay is immensely beneficial, encouraging interaction with people from different backgrounds and assisting them in adapting to new environments. The advantages of undertaking a residential course are visible every year upon the girls’ return, with maturity and confidence demonstrably improved. From language to cookery courses to sports camps the options are vast and can be chosen to complement a girl’s studies or extra-curricular interests.
