Charities

Raising money for charity is an important element of life at St. Mary’s where we encourage the girls to think about those less fortunate than themselves and then to actively do something to help.  Events take place all year and the girls organise a variety of activities in support of a wide range of charities.  They work with great energy and enthusiasm to raise thousands of pounds each year.  Some of the recent charity events are listed below.

Lepra

The girls took part in two sponsored workout sessions which raised enough money to cure over 85 people with leprosy.  It only costs £21 for a cure but if left untreated, leprosy can take away the use of hands and feet and isolate sufferers from their friends and family.

Send a Cow

Year 6 held a sponsored silence which raised enough money to send to East Africa a cow, a pair of goats, a flock of poultry, a hive of bees, 100 fruit tree saplings and 15 days of training in animal care and organic farming.

Tsunami relief

Senior House and parents held several fundraising events whilst a sponsored 'X Factor' event provided the girls with a chance to display their performing skills and help raise a significant amount of money for the relief fund at the same time.

Children in Need

St. Mary’s regularly supports the Children in Need charity.  One year, Butler house organised a fancy dress competition and we were treated to year 6 in pyjamas, the Sixth Form coming in en masse as pirates, and the staff, who walked into assembly dressed as wise owls, complete with face masks!

Dreamflight

This is a charity which raises money for terminally ill children to have the holiday of a lifetime.  Year 8 organised a themed ‘Disney’ non-uniform day and held a delicious cake sale at break time.

In the Pink

Usually we have a ‘wear a pink top’ day in support of this breast cancer research charity, but recently we went one better by also having a pink Rolls Royce on site.

Others

Other charities which have benefited from events at St. Mary’s include Jeans for Genes, Macmillan Nurses, NSPCC, Red Nose Day, memorial poppies, the sale of Christmas stars and the filling of aqua boxes.
